Faculty Q/A
What do you value and care about outside of your professional duties?
Family adventures, gatherings with old college friends, the art in nature, Front Range clouds, coffee, and Radiohead
What encouraged you to go into (and stay in) higher education?
My most supportive and most life-changing mentor, Arizona State University’s Dr. Libby Wentz, directed me into higher education. Early on in my graduate student career, Dr. Wentz invited me to participate in her research projects, included me in a grant, added me as coauthor on a publication, and encouraged me to teach a GIS class with full course responsibility. Upon reflection, her guidance and mentorship built my early CV and my confidence to flourish in academia. Teaching and learning in the mountains and conducting research in topics I love (and summers off) are why I stay in higher education.
What are your own professional goals and aspirations?
To increase student participation in off-campus expeditionary-style courses.
What is your favorite place?
The Weminuche Wilderness, Grand Teton National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Washington, DC.
